Presentation Notes

Foamed glass aggregates were originally produced in Scandinavia during the early 1990s for use as a thermal barrier in road construction. Due to their low unit weight (8-15pcf) and high frictional properties, their applications have grown throughout the civil engineering market. Today foamed glass aggregates are used as lightweight fill on highways, bridge abutments, retaining walls, and green roofs. Other applications include backfill of foundations for drainage, insulation (to prevent frost heave), and reduction of lateral loads.

The presentation will review the development, manufacturing, applications current testing and case studies for foamed glass aggregates.

Speaker Biography

Archie Filshill, Ph.D., has over 25 years of experience in geotechnical markets, focused on design/build and value engineering. His work includes in markets for solid waste and industrial landfills, soft soil stabilization, coal ash, shale gas development, flexible solar for landfill closures, sediment remediation, reinforced earth structures and lightweight fill.

Dr. Filshill is adjunct professor at Temple University's Graduate Engineering School. He is Vice Chair of the Delaware Valley Geo-Institute, member of the Geosynthetic Institute and International Geosynthetic Society, and owner and manager of AeroAggregates.

Dr. Filshill earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at Temple University and a master's and Ph.D. in civil engineering at Drexel University.
