 Presentation Notes
The proposed bridge is a three-span bridge over Christina River in Wilmington, Delaware. It is approximately 470-ft long and 45-ft wide. The subsurface soils along the approaches to the bridge on both sides of the river consist of contaminated, very soft, fine-grained soils extending to a depth of up to 40-ft below the existing ground surface.

The main geotechnical challenge on the project was the design of the approach embankments. The design had to consider the settlement of the foundation soil, downdrag on the bridge foundation due to the settlement, global stability, stability during flood events, and lateral squeeze. Multiple alternatives were evaluated and different solutions proposed for each approach. Construction is currently underway.

Design team geotechnical engineers will present on the design of the Christina River Bridge's approaches - one with EPS geofoam and the other with conventional mechanically stabilized earth on controlled modulus columns.

Eric M. Klein, P.E., D.GE is a Senior Manager with RK&K. Bibek B. Shrestha, P.E. is Senior Project Engineer with RK&K.
